Research has shown that muscles not exercised against resistance lose their strength, shape and tone. Except during changes in facial expression, the muscles of your face are not exercised at all. Changes in facial expression offer very little resistance to the movement of your facial muscles. Consequently, over time your facial muscles weaken. A primary result of the loss of facial muscle strength and tone is a sagging appearance.

Facial Aging
"Mechanically Aided Resistance"

Facial appearance is particularly influenced by the underlying muscles of facial expression since they are directly attached to the skin. Consequently, age associated changes in facial wrinkles and sags are not only due to loss of dermal elasticity, but also might reflect weakened facial muscles.
